Centenary Celebration Friday 23rd July was the evening we held our Centenary Celebrations at the Melbourne Aquarium. With 60 people in attendance it was great to see some old faces as well as some new ones. We also had Tony Apthorpe from our brothers in NSW in attendance. The night kicked off with President Dyson Appleyard welcoming all to the very picturesque venue, detailing what the VGA was and still is about, highlighting the need for us to really work together to keep our wonderful industry going. Melbourne Comedian Chris Bennett then took the floor and had the crowd in fits of laughter.... even taking the risk of calling Darren “Turf Hog “ a gnome... living on the edge there Chris.... Greenkeeper of the year was then announced with the 5 Finalists being.... Adrian Marston - Middle Park BC Warren Maynard - MCC BC David Zitters - Williamstown BC Gary Thurgood - Lalor BC Scott Roberts - Sebastopol BC With Gary taking this years honours in a tight contest. His acceptance speech was great and he had everyones attention. Doug Agnew was then awarded Life Membership to the VGA , which is a great honour. The rest of the night was just all in attendance having a great time catching, talking about the old days. It was great to see Life Members, Keith Fleetwood, Len McKenzie, Tom Tucker there as we haven’t seen them for ages, also to Billy Hamshere, Peter Barron, great to see you boys as well. We’re sure everyone had a great night and think that this was the perfect way to celebrate turning 100...... here’s to the next 100 years
